Senators Alexander, Murray Comment on Chairman Upton’s Discussion Document for the “21st Century Cures” Initiative

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 – Senate health committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-Wash.) commented on the release of House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton’s (R-Mich.) discussion document for the “21st Century Cures” initiative:

“One of the committee’s top priorities this year will be modernizing the Food and Drug Administration, helping to get treatments and medicines to patients as quickly and as safely as possible,” said Alexander. “This work will help make virtually every American healthier through innovation, and I look forward to working with Ranking Member Murray and Chairman Upton as we begin our bipartisan effort in the Senate health committee to have legislation to the President by the end of this year.”

“I’m proud to represent a state that has a tradition of innovation and leadership in the biomedical sciences,” said Murray. “I ‎believe strongly that federal laws and resources should continue to support this tradition nationwide, while upholding the highest standards of patient and consumer safety. I look forward to reviewing the proposal released today and working with Chairman Alexander, Chairman Upton, Ranking Member Pallone, and all of our colleagues on bipartisan policies to advance innovation for patients and families across the country.”
