Alexander Statement on NGA Endorsement of Every Student Succeeds Act

National Governors Association Issues First Full Endorsement of Legislation in Nearly 20 Years

WASHINGTON, November 30 – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate education committee, released the following statement on the National Governors Association’s full endorsement of the Every Student Succeeds Act:

“The National Governors Association's full endorsement of our bipartisan legislation to fix No Child Left Behind—the group's first such endorsement of any federal legislation in nearly 20 years—is of huge significance. It is one more sign that there is a consensus that everyone wants this law fixed—governors, teachers, parents, Republicans and Democrats. It also confirms that there is a consensus about how to fix it: by continuing the law’s important measures of academic progress of students but restoring to states, school districts, classroom teachers, and parents the responsibility for deciding what to do about improving student achievement.”
