Enzi: FDA Should Expedite Review of Applications for Drugs in Shortage

“We Must Move Quickly to Get Lifesaving Drugs to Patients in Need”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a committee hearing on prescription drug shortages today, Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Ranking Member on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, said that it was essential to move quickly to get lifesaving drugs to patients in need. He also said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should do more to address the shortage situation.

“It is crucial to understand the causes that lead to the tragic problem of prescription drug shortages so that we can move as quickly as possible to get lifesaving drugs to the patients that need them,” said Senator Enzi.  “Congress must implement a solution that will not only mitigate shortages in the short term, but address underlying causes so we do not find ourselves in this tragic situation again.  The FDA should be doing more to address these problems now like expediting the review of any applications for drugs in shortage.”
