HOBBY LOBBY: Murray Statement on Anniversary of Supreme Court Decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.

“The Supreme Court has helped move our country forward in many ways over the past week. But we can’t forget that one year ago today, five male justices told women that their health care decisions and benefits are their boss’s business, and in doing so, turned back the clock on women’s health and rights.

“Since then this broad, unprecedented Supreme Court-issued license to discriminate has allowed businesses across the country to deny women access to health insurance benefits they have earned, and a worker’s right to make their own autonomous decisions about everything from vaccinations to HIV treatment has been put at risk.

“I believe strongly that in the 21st century, women should be able to make their own decisions about their own bodies—and no one should have to ask their boss for permission to get the health care they need.

“I’m going to continue fighting back against this wrong-headed, damaging decision with the Not My Boss’s Business Act and other critical steps to restore lost benefits, protect workers’ health care and rights, and move our country forward, not backward, for women and families.”

Last year, Murray introduced the Not My Boss’s Business Act, to protect women’s health in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision.
