Sen. Murray: Fisher Decision A Ruling “In Favor of Fairness and Equity”

Murray: Affirmative action has been an integral part of our country’s ongoing effort to promote equal opportunity for all

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), the top Democrat on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court decision in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, which upheld the use of affirmative action plans in college admissions.

“Today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of fairness and equity at institutions of higher education nationwide. As a result, our colleges and universities will continue to have critical tools to realize the full value of diversity and inclusion on campus, and more students will have the chance to earn a college degree and all the opportunity that comes with it. Affirmative action has been an integral part of our country’s ongoing effort to promote equal opportunity for all, and this decision is another critical step forward on that path. There’s no question that our country is stronger when all students, from all walks of life, have clear pathways into and through higher education—and when every person has a level playing field on which to work toward their dreams. I am more committed than ever to continuing that fight.”
