Chair Cassidy Applauds HHS Effort to Protect Children from Irreversible Chemical and Surgical Mutilation

WASHINGTON Today, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a statement following a new U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report highlighting the dangers of allowing children to undergo irreversible chemical and surgical mutilation.

The report also criticizes the treatment guidelines of major medical organizations, which continue to promote puberty blockers and gender transition surgeries for children against scientific data.

“As a physician, I am extremely concerned that medical organizations continue to push irreversible gender transitions for children, ignoring the scientific data. Children need the best care that is supported by science, not extreme ideology,” said Dr. Cassidy. “I will continue to lead the charge with President Trump to protect children from irreversible harm.”

Last month, Cassidy called on the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) to comply with President Trump’s executive order to ensure children are not subjected to chemical and surgical mutilation. He also launched an investigation last fall into WPATH and other medical organizations for promoting gender transition procedures for children without reliable scientific data. WPATH’s standards of care influence nearly all other medical societies that publish similar guidelines. The HHS report highlights WPATH’s role in advancing standards based on flawed and inaccurate science, driven by its ideological beliefs as an advocacy organization.
