Murray: “After talking with Dr. Cardona today, it’s clear that he is an excellent choice for Secretary Education who will bring the right experience and priorities to the role.”

Murray: “As a 4th grade teacher, principal, superintendent, professor and Education Commissioner of Connecticut, he has always been focused on ensuring every student—no matter their zip code, the language they speak, their race, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability—can reach their full potential.”

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), top Democrat on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement after meeting by phone with Connecticut Education Commissioner Dr. Miguel Cardona, President-elect Biden’s nominee to serve as Secretary of Education.

“After talking with Dr. Cardona today, it’s clear that he is an excellent choice for Secretary Education who will bring the right experience and priorities to the role. As a 4th grade teacher, principal, superintendent, professor and Education Commissioner of Connecticut, he has always been focused on ensuring every student—no matter their zip code, the language they speak, their race, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability—can reach their full potential.

“Dr. Cardona’s personal story of growing up in public housing and learning English as a second language is a testament to the power of public education, and has driven him to champion the needs of students of color, students from families with low incomes, and English learners throughout his career.

“I’m confident that he is the leader our nation’s students, educators, and schools need not just to get ‘back to normal’ but also to address the longstanding inequities that have been exacerbated by this pandemic. I look forward to working with him and the Biden Administration on ensuring that every student—from our preschool learners, to children in K-12 schools, to higher education students and lifelong learners—gets the education they deserve.

“Given his impressive qualifications and the critical role of the Secretary of Education in addressing the crisis facing our education system, I will act quickly to ensure Dr. Cardona receives a swift, fair confirmation.”
