Alexander Statement on Commissioner Margaret Hamburg Stepping Down from the FDA

WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 5 –U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today made the following statement on the announcement from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg that she plans to step down as commissioner at the end of March:

"I am grateful to Dr. Hamburg for her leadership of the FDA. We worked together to find a solution that would help prevent another compounding crisis after the 2012 fungal meningitis outbreak that killed 64 people, including 16 Tennesseans. I hope the president nominates an FDA Commissioner who will work closely with Congress on finding ways to get safe medical treatments, devices and drugs to patients more quickly."
