STATEMENT OF SENATOR EDWARD M. KENNEDY ON THE 2009 MEDICARE TRUSTEES REPORT

WASHINGTON, DC— Senator Edward M. Kennedy today released the following statement

regarding the Medicare Trustees Report of 2009, which includes updated projections for the

solvency of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds:

“This disturbing report confirms what we all know – our health care system is in crisis, and the

status quo is not sustainable. The President understands the urgency of the problem, and I’m

honored to be working with him and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in Congress to

reduce health costs and create a system that guarantees quality and affordable care for all.

“Much work remains, and the coming weeks won’t be easy. But we have a unique opportunity to

give the American people, at long last, the health care they need and deserve. We can’t afford to

miss it.”
