Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY), Ranking Member of the SenateHealth, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, today said Congress should use thereauthorization of America’s national service programs as an opportunity to improve theiradministration and accountability, and reduce bureaucratic barriers that have limited theirsuccess.
“A comprehensive reauthorization of our national service statutes is long overdue,” Enzisaid. “We need to give these programs a hard look and determine where we can makeimprovements, eliminate waste, and expand our efforts responsibly. “As the Senate’s only accountant, I relish the challenge of strengthening the managementand fiscal accountability of federal programs.”
At today’s HELP Committee hearing, “The Next Generation of National Service,” Enzisaid that Congress is on track to get a bipartisan National Service bill to the President quickly,but through regular order.
“This hearing is an important starting point for the reauthorization of our national servicelaws,” Enzi said. “We need to continue to work in a bipartisan way, incorporate the ideas thatSenators Hatch and Kennedy have put together, and get a bill to the President in the next fewweeks.” ####
